Page one is losing power. Be the source the AI quotes.

AI assistants now close a growing share of local searches on their own. How a small business becomes a source they cite instead of a node they skip.
For twenty years, the goal was page one. Rank there and the traffic came. That road is being rebuilt while we drive on it: a growing share of searches now end inside an AI answer, with no list of blue links at all.
What actually changes
The assistant does not browse. It quotes. When someone asks “best family dentist near Coral Gables that takes Cigna,” the model assembles an answer from sources it can parse and trust. If your site is a PDF menu and a homepage that says “Welcome to our website,” you are not quotable. You are invisible.
The quotable site
Three properties make a business citable by machines, and all three are things good sites wanted anyway.
First, answer-shaped content. One page per real question, with the answer in the first paragraph, not after 400 words of throat-clearing.
Second, structured data. Schema markup is how you spell your hours, prices, services, and location in a language machines do not have to guess at.
Third, consistency across the map. Your name, address, and phone number should match everywhere they appear. Disagreement reads as doubt, and models skip doubtful sources.
The practical move
Do not wait for the dust to settle. The businesses winning AI citations right now are the ones that did this work in 2025, while their competitors waited. The interstate is being rerouted. Get your sign up before the new exits are assigned.
