5 Paint Correction Myths That Are Costing You Money
The detailing industry is full of misinformation. We address the five most common misconceptions about paint correction that lead owners to make expensive mistakes.
Myth 1: Any Swirl Marks Can Be Fixed With The Right Wax
Wax fills scratches temporarily. This is a fact that the detailing product industry would prefer you didn’t know clearly. Wax and fillers make paint look better in certain lighting by temporarily filling defect channels, but the defects remain. Within a few washes, as the filler rinses away, the swirls return—often looking worse because you now have wax residue in the scratches.
Paint correction—actual machine polishing with diminishing abrasive compounds—removes material from the clear coat surrounding the scratch, leveling the surface. This is the only way to actually eliminate defects.
Myth 2: Paint Correction Removes Too Much Clear Coat
An untrained operator using the wrong product combination absolutely can cause excessive clear coat removal. But professional paint correction is a measured, monitored process. We measure paint thickness before, during, and after using an electromagnetic gauge accurate to 0.1 microns.
A typical single-stage machine polish removes 0.5–1.5 microns of clear coat. A factory clear coat is typically 40–60 microns thick. With professional application, a vehicle can safely undergo several rounds of correction over its lifetime.
Myth 3: My Black Car Can’t Be Corrected
Black paint is difficult—not impossible. It shows swirl marks most visibly because the defects create directional reflection that contrasts with the surrounding dark surface. This same property means corrections are visually obvious when done correctly.
The correction process is identical regardless of color. Black vehicles that leave our workshop with properly corrected paint look genuinely spectacular—the depth and clarity of properly polished black paint is difficult to capture in photographs.
Myth 4: A Machine Polish Will Leave Hologram Marks
Machine-induced holograms (also called buffer trails) are the artifact of using the wrong polish/pad combination, or finishing with too aggressive a product. A single-cut compound must be followed by a finishing polish with a finishing pad to remove the microscopic scratches left by the initial cut.
Our multi-stage process ensures the final stage leaves the surface optically flat. If you can see holograms, the job isn’t finished.
Myth 5: I Should Wait Until The Paint Is Really Bad Before Correcting
The opposite is true. Light correction on relatively defect-free paint requires less material removal and produces better results with lower risk. Severe oxidation, deep scratches, and heavy water spot etching require aggressive compounds and significant clear coat removal.
Maintaining paint with light correction and quality protection between corrections preserves more clear coat over the vehicle’s lifetime than waiting for severe deterioration.
