A practical month-by-month guide to vehicle maintenance detailing—from weekly washes to annual paint correction. The schedule our own technicians follow.

The Difference Between Cleaning and Maintaining

Washing your car removes contamination. Maintaining your car preserves the paint, protects the surfaces, and slows the degradation that makes vehicles look old. These are different activities, and most owners only do the first.

The good news: proper maintenance doesn’t require hours every weekend. It requires a few hours several times a year, a few minutes weekly, and the right products used correctly.

Weekly: The Two-Minute Check

Before washing, inspect the paint in direct sunlight. Look for bird dropping contamination (alkaline, will etch the clear coat within hours on a sunny day), tree sap, insect remains on the front surfaces, and any obvious scratches or chips. Remove bird droppings and tree sap immediately with a dedicated remover before washing.

Bi-Weekly: Proper Hand Wash

A proper maintenance wash uses the two-bucket method: one bucket with shampoo solution, one with clean rinse water. Grit guards in both buckets. Wash top-down in straight lines, not circles. Rinse media in the clean bucket before loading it with shampoo again. This simple discipline prevents the vast majority of wash-induced swirl marks.

Dry with a clean microfiber towel—never a regular bath towel or anything that’s touched the ground.

Monthly: Tire and Glass Treatment

Once a month, apply tire dressing to the sidewalls (a satin finish product, not the glossy gel that flings off onto your paint). Polish exterior glass with a dedicated glass compound and apply a rain repellent treatment. Properly treated glass in rain is a meaningful safety improvement.

Quarterly: Full Decontamination

Every three months, add a full decontamination step to the normal wash process. Clay bar the paint to remove embedded iron particles, road tar, and industrial fallout that normal washing doesn’t remove. After claying, apply a spray sealant or top up the ceramic coating with a spray topper. This maintains the hydrophobic properties between professional maintenance visits.

Annually: Machine Polish and Inspection

Once a year, bring the vehicle in for professional assessment. Even with disciplined maintenance, a full year of driving accumulates light swirl marks that benefit from a single-stage machine polish. This is also the right time for us to inspect paint thickness, evaluate any chips or scratches, and assess whether a full ceramic reapplication is warranted.

The vehicles that maintain their value and appearance longest are the ones treated with this level of consistent attention. It’s not complicated—it’s just consistent.
