Studio — Full Stack Evolved

We shape space through the discipline of measured light.

DATUM is a boutique architecture and interior design studio built on a single premise: that precision and restraint are not limitations, but the highest form of ambition.

Founded in Oslo, we work across residential, cultural, and commercial briefs — always returning to the same fixed point: what does this space need to be, measured to the millimetre?

Philosophy

Architecture that earns its place on the datum.

We are a practice of seven — architects, a structural engineer, and a material researcher — working from a converted quayside studio in the Bjørvika district of Oslo. Our projects are predominantly Scandinavian, though we have worked in the UK, Germany, and Portugal.

Our approach is rooted in section drawing: we understand a building by cutting through it vertically, finding the datum line that organises every relationship of floor, ceiling, threshold, and light. That datum becomes the non-negotiable fixed point from which all detail is measured.

We resist ornament where structure can speak. We resist complexity where one clear idea, held with enough precision, produces more than a dozen competing gestures ever could.

"The datum is not a line on a drawing. It is a commitment to a fixed condition that everything else is measured from."

  • 01

    Restraint

Remove everything that cannot justify its presence in the drawing.

  • 02

    Precision

Every dimension is a commitment. The millimetre is not arbitrary.

  • 03

    Duration

We build for fifty years, not five. Material choices are consequential.

  • 04

    Light

The datum of every room is the quality of its light at a fixed hour.

Process

Four fixed conditions. Every project, without exception.

↔ Brief

Listen before drawing

Every project starts with restraint — a period of listening, measuring, and mapping the site's fixed conditions before a single line is committed. The datum is established here.

↕ Concept

One structural idea

We resist the impulse to complexity. A good building has one idea, held precisely across every scale from the masterplan section to the door handle. We test proposals against that single idea until it survives.

↔ Precision

Measure everything

Architecture is precise or it is nothing. Materials are specified at the millimetre; light conditions are modelled through every hour of a solstice day. The dimension annotation is not decoration — it is the discipline.

↕ Delivery

Held to the datum

We remain on site through to completion. The datum line drawn in the briefing room must be the same datum line poured in concrete. Compromise is noted, documented, and answered for — never quietly swallowed.
