
On the Datum Line — Fixing a Point Before You Build
Every project begins with a negotiation between two types of ground: the one you inherit and the one you establish. The datum is where those two grounds meet — a surveyed reference elevation that holds the entire section together.

It is a surveyed reference elevation, a fixed number etched into a steel bench mark, from which everything else in the section is measured up or down. Without it, there is no section. There is only a pile of parts.
We have been working for the past year on a small cultural building in a provincial Norwegian town. The site sits at the junction of a glacially carved fjord and a nineteenth-century quayside, and the question of datum has been genuinely difficult: do we set it to the water level — tidal, variable, quietly menacing — or to the quay itself, which is already half a metre above mean high water and rising every decade with the fill? Or do we find our own fixed point, independent of either, driven into bedrock?
The Surveyor’s Mark
A datum bench mark is not particularly interesting to look at. It is a bronze disc, perhaps sixty millimetres across, set into concrete or masonry with a small arrow indicating the precise point. The number stamped on it — the Ordnance Datum elevation in metres above mean sea level — is the number every contractor, engineer, and architect on the project will repeat, confirm, and recite until the project is complete.
What makes the datum interesting is not the mark itself but the discipline it imposes. Once you set a datum, you have made a commitment. Every floor finish, every structural soffit, every door threshold, every drainage invert — all of them are now referenced to this single number. The datum does not care about your preferences. It is prior to preference. It was there before you arrived on site.
In practice, modern projects carry the datum as a string of derived levels: finished floor level (FFL), structural floor level (SFL), top of slab (TOS), underside of beam (USB). These labels populate the section drawings like a dense annotation layer, each one a precise distance above or below the original bench mark. When a contractor reads a section, he is reading a hierarchy of distances from a single fixed point. The section is, in this sense, a kind of music: the datum is the tonic, and everything else is interval.
On Setting Your Own Datum
For the fjordside building, we eventually chose neither the water nor the quay. We drove a micro-pile to bedrock — a concrete plug, 200mm in diameter, sunk eight metres below the surface — and etched our own reference into it. The elevation of the top of this plug is +0.000 on our drawings. Everything above it is positive; everything below is negative.
This was not a purely technical decision. There is something clarifying about choosing to begin from nothing — from zero — rather than inheriting an elevation that carries the ambiguity of the landscape. The quay is already weighted with history: it has been built up, eroded, rebuilt, contested. The bedrock is neutral. It has no opinion about the project.
The datum we set is +4.850m above mean sea level. Our finished ground floor will sit at +5.300m: 450mm above the datum plug, 300mm above the top of the quay, and 800mm above the highest recorded flood level in the fjord. These numbers took three months to agree. They are the result of meetings with municipal engineers, conversations with the harbourmaster, and a long afternoon sitting on the quay watching the tide.
Reading the Section
When you look at a section drawing, you are looking at a cut through space — a vertical slice that shows how the building meets the ground, how the floors stack, how light enters from above. The datum line runs horizontally across this drawing, usually as a heavier line than the rest, with a small triangle marker at each end and the reference elevation annotated in a mono typeface.
Everything above the datum line is in compression: it bears down. Everything below the datum line is in tension with the earth: it holds back water, or cold, or the weight of the building above. The datum is the moment of exchange between these two conditions. It is, in a structural sense, the most loaded line on the drawing — the line at which the building makes its settlement with the ground.
What I find useful about this is the way the datum forces a reading of the site as a physical entity rather than an abstract plane. You cannot set a datum without understanding the hydrology, the geology, the maintenance history of the adjacent infrastructure. The datum is an act of attention.
The Architectural Datum
We have started, tentatively, to use the word datum beyond its technical meaning — to describe any reference condition in a project to which other elements are measured. The underside of the main roof beam is a datum. The centreline of the entrance portal is a datum. The threshold condition between inside and outside — the line at which the material changes — is a datum.
This is partly habit, partly polemical intent. We are interested in architecture that can be read — that is legible to someone standing in the building, that shows its workings. A building with a clear architectural datum is one in which you can, in principle, reconstruct the measuring process that produced it: you can sense where the project began, what was fixed first, how the other conditions derive from that fixity.
This is not the same as an architecture that is rigidly geometric. The datum can govern a plan of considerable looseness and apparent informality. What it governs is the section — the vertical relationship between things. A building in which floors are at arbitrary heights, in which structural soffits bear no legible relationship to finish floors, in which windows are centred on their openings by eye rather than by number — this is a building without a datum. It may be a good building. It may be a beautiful building. But it is a building in which the measuring process is hidden rather than expressed.
