There’s a particular quality to the light at 4:47pm in November when you’re standing inside a building looking out. It has weight. It has intention. You did nothing to earn it.
This is the light I chase.
Equipment has its place — I’m not a luddite about it. But there’s a category of cinematographic thinking that says the first question is always: what is the available light doing, and how do I serve it?
A practitioner who immediately reaches for a bounce card to “fix” the light in a room has already lost something. The question should be: what is this light saying, and is it useful to the story?
